Plan mode is a structured planning phase: the agent explores the codebase and designs an approach before writing product code. Use it when the task is ambiguous and a wrong approach would waste real work.

What plan mode does

While plan mode is active:

  1. The agent reads and searches freely
  2. It drafts a plan (markdown) and may ask clarifying questions
  3. Product-file edits are rejected (read-only) except the plan surface
  4. It presents the plan for approval before implementation

Permission modes still apply. Plan mode is an extra constraint on write tools.

How to enter

From the TUI

  • Shift+Tab cycles: Manual → Normal → AcceptEdits → Auto → Plan
  • Slash: /plan (or start a turn with a planning-oriented skill)

The mode badge in the status area shows the current mode.

From the agent

The model can call plan-mode tools (EnterPlanMode / ExitPlanMode style) when the task warrants it. Exit typically opens a plan review modal:

ActionKeyEffect
ApproveaLeave plan toward AcceptEdits so implementation can run
Keep planningkStay in plan mode
DismissEscClose without approving

When to use it

Good fits

  • “Add authentication” (many architectures)
  • “Redesign the pipeline”
  • “Add caching” (Redis vs in-process vs CDN)

Usually overkill

  • Fix a typo
  • Add a clear, localized button
  • One-file bugfix with an obvious root cause

Tips

  • Put project conventions in AGENTS.md so plans reuse your patterns
  • After approval, stay in AcceptEdits or Normal for the implementation turn
  • Use /compact if a long planning session fills the context window
